Mac OS X built-in Applications are Locked

I just discovered that by default the user does not have write permissions for Mac OS X’s built-in applications. This does not seem to apply to iLife and iWork.

This means I can not set the colour label. Quite shocking! I was trying to apply a colour to all the applications I do not use regularly.
